My
introduction with photography began in the early mid-nineties when I bought a Pentax K1000 and a 50 mm lens. Within a few weeks I was trying
to get my photos into small newspapers around Boston, but with little success.
Then one day while carrying my camera through the streets, there was a minor explosion
and I, living with the maxim of never leave the house without it was
there to shoot the fire trucks arriving on the scene. For 5 dollars I sold the
picture to a local bi-monthly and received my first assignment.
For me
a camera became a passport into other worlds, a reason for being there. I began
working on photo-essays and it led to a 1999 Photographer of the Year award from
the New England Press Photographers Association. I then took a job with Getty
Images and was responsible for their New England coverage for two years. In spring
of 2002 I went freelance and spent a month covering the Israel/Palestinian conflict
for Getty. In 2003 I spent 5 months on assignment, again for Getty, covering
the post-war difficulties in Afghanistan.
My work has been seen in Time,
Newsweek, U.S. News and World Report, The New York Times, The New York Times Magazine,
People Magazine, The L.A. Times, Scholastic Magazine, and hundreds of newspapers
and magazines around the world.
