Tucuman: December 2002

A country with twice the amount of cows to people, and children were dying of starvation. Much of the countries problems generated from the economic collapse in late 2001. Politicians were stealing money designated for various regions. I pitched the story to every newspaper I could but got no interest. At the time weapons inspectors were going back to Iraq and we were inundated with mundane photos of inspectors getting in and out of white cars. I took a 13-hour bus ride from where I was living in Mendoza to a little hospital in Tucuman. I spoke with the director of the hospital who told me that children were needlessly dying every day. She asked me to tell the story. I didn’t want to tell her that no one seemed to care because there was a better story in Iraq, and Argentina does not register on the US’s radar. I spent 3 days at the hospital, taking photos of starving children that no one was going to see.
