A friend and I put on our flak vests and walked over a hill to
some taxi drivers waiting to take us into Bethlehem. The West Bank had been seized
by the Israelis and every day there were shootings and killings. I had been
in Israel just a day when I found myself ducking for cover in Manger Square, in
front of the Church of the Nativity, where Christ was said to have been born.
I wondered what he would have thought about it all, and then ran off to find better
cover.
