This was my first introduction to covering
conflicts and post-war areas. I flew into Macedonia, itself on the verge of war,
and the next day took a taxi to the border with Kosovo. I walked across the heavily
armed border and negotiated a taxi to Pristina. We drove for a few miles when
the driver pulled over to the side of the road and motioned for me to follow him.
We walked up a hillside and stood looking out over hundreds of graves of his fellow
Albanians. In the distance were destroyed houses and the smoke of fires burning.
Then we drove to Pristina.
