February-March 2005
Everywhere I have gone since 1999 has been as a photojournalist. So I found it strange to be going somewhere quite specifically not as a photojournalist. The ruling military junta does not like reporters so much, so where it asked 'occupation' on the visa application, I lied. I wrote 'teacher.' I had to, it was the only way in. Even though I really was going as a tourist, I still had to write 'teacher'. I hated lying and hoped they didn't throw math questions at me. I spent two weeks on buses and in hostels, seeing a great country filled full of kind and spiritual people.
