March 2001

Each morning we would get in a helicopter and be flown out onto the ice floes. A moon-like world that floats and creaks. One morning I got up at 4 am and flew out over the ice to the Magdalan islands in the Gulf of Saint Lawrence. I drove around the island with an old sealer who told me that after paying bills a sealer may take in 100 dollars a day if they are lucky. It’s a dangerous job being a sealer, cold and tough. But it is their way of life. If they don’t hunt their families don’t eat.
